The Kodenshi dust sensor detects dust by irradiating particles passing through an air through-hole with infrared light and measuring the amount of light scattered. When dust is detected, the sensor outputs a negative pulse of 0V, when no dust is detected, the output is 5V. The total amount of 0V output time during a measurement period of 30 seconds is then used to calculate the amount of dust in the air (see output monitor figure below).
Fig.2.
Dust particles can be detected starting at a diameter of 1μ and a concentration of 38μg/m3. The sensor has a size of 30x25x12.8mm, making it one of the smallest dust sensors currently available.
Unlike most other optical sensors, verification of the use environment is important to ensure smooth detection. We are pleased to design modules specifically tailored to your unique needs, so please do not hesitate to contact us using the form below.

Using the HIC192 dust sensor, Kodenshi has also developed two module products that come with a power supply and communication capabilities. The newly developed MSG193 module has a remarkably small outline of only 34x19x13.8 mm. It uses a heating system to generate its own airflow and can thus be used in places where no air circulation is present. MSG195 on the other hand does not include a circulation system, making it suitable for application where an air flow already exists. Please check the data sheet for more detailed information and specifications.
The HIC192 dust sensor can be used in various applications, such as factory dust management or monitoring of dust in an office or a home environment as part of a Smart Home system. Using multiple modules also opens up the possibility of visualizing dust distribution in a closed space. Since the modules are designed to be extremely compact, they can also be used as wearable devices, for instance by installing them on helmets.
